What Creates Impact in Wedding Flowers (And Why Every Design Is Different)

One of the questions I get asked most often is:

"How much should we budget for wedding flowers?"

And honestly? It's a fair question.

But it's also one of the hardest to answer. Because wedding flowers are a little bit like architecture, fashion or interior design. Two projects can look beautiful. Yet the thinking, scale and craftsmanship behind them can be completely different.

When couples first start planning their wedding in Amsterdam, they often imagine flowers as a list of items:

A bridal bouquet.

A ceremony arrangement.

A few centrepieces.

Done.

But flowers don't create atmosphere because they're on a checklist.
They create atmosphere because of how they transform a space and how they make people feel when they walk into it. That's where the real difference lies.

It Starts With The Feeling You Want To Create

Before I think about flower varieties or colour palettes, I always think about atmosphere.

How should the space feel?

Intimate and understated?

Soft and romantic?

Architectural and modern?

The most memorable weddings are rarely the ones with the most flowers.

They're the ones where every detail feels intentional.

The flowers work together with the venue, the light, the table settings and the overall experience.

When everything feels connected, guests notice.

Even if they can't explain why.

Scale Changes Everything

One of the biggest factors in floral design is scale. Not necessarily the size of the wedding.

The scale of the visual impact.

A bouquet for twenty guests and a bouquet for one hundred guests may require exactly the same amount of design attention. But creating a floral installation that transforms an entire room is a very different process.

Larger designs often involve:

* More flowers

* More preparation time

* More mechanics and structure

* Additional installation hours

* A larger creative team

What guests experience as effortless beauty often requires a significant amount of planning behind the scenes.
And that's exactly how it should feel.

Effortless.

## Flower Choice Matters Less Than Most People Think

Many couples arrive with a specific flower in mind.

And sometimes we use it.

Sometimes we don't.

The reality is that the most beautiful floral designs are rarely built around a single flower.

They're built around a mood.

A colour story.

A sense of movement.

A feeling.

Some of the most elegant designs I've created have relied on seasonal flowers chosen specifically for the venue, the time of year and the overall atmosphere we wanted to create.

The result always feels more natural, more refined and more connected to the day itself.

Design Is More Than Flowers

This is often the part people don't see. A floral design begins long before the flowers arrive.

There are venue visits.

Concept development.

Moodboards.

Colour studies.

Sketches.

Conversations about how guests will move through a space and where key moments will happen.
As a floral designer, my role isn't simply selecting flowers.It's helping create an environment where every detail works together.

Flowers are one element of that story.

An important one.

But never the only one.

Choosing The Right Florist

I don't believe every florist is the right fit for every wedding.

And that's perfectly okay.

Some couples are looking for simple florals that complement the day. Others want flowers to play a more significant role in the overall experience.The couples who work with me are often looking for something beyond individual arrangements.

They care deeply about atmosphere.

About aesthetics.

About creating something thoughtful, personal and beautifully considered.

The flowers become part of a bigger story.

And those are always my favourite projects to design.
